My camara is fixed and I´m happily snapping photos again.  I had given up on the notion that I could fix my camera for a decent price so I used Pedro´s old manual camera, remember those. So unfortunately I don´t have digital photos to share for many of the trips I´ve taken this year. However, I will try to scan a few photos from my travels to Budapest, Hungary; Antwerp, Belgium; Utrecht, The Netherlands, as well as Sigüenza and Zaragoza in Spain. I do have photos from my recent trips to Marrakesh, Morroco and Portugal.

Vuelta de España : Our summer tour of Spain began when Natalie, Ryan, and Fiona drove to Madrid to pick me up and after a brief stop at the Bulgarian Embassy we were off to meet Heather at the airport. We drove to Vitoria in the Basque country where we spent the night since it would be impossible to spend the night in Pamplona where the fiestas of San Fermin and the running of the bulls are. After a night of some delicious pinchos or tapas and wine we rose at 5am to get a good spot for the encierro(running of the bulls). We made sure to wear our uniform of white with a red scarf and joined the drunken crowd of revelers many who were still partying from the night before. A nice man with a good spot to see the bulls offered a seat for Fiona and Natalie which was perfect being that it was Fiona´s 2nd birthday. The bulls I did see were blonde which surprised me and although I could see the panic-stricken corredores(runners), it was difficult to see through the butts of people who were sitting on peoples shoulders. I guess the encierro we saw wasn´t limpio because some of the bulls got a little confused and didn´t run straight to the plaza de toros(bull ring) so after closing the gate they had to reopen it to let in the wandering bulls and frightened corredores. We were lucky not to have witnessed any goring so then we were off to La Rioja a famous region in Spain for wine. We sampled vino at two bodegas(vineyards) and stocked up for the rest of the trip before heading to San Sebastian. Gorgeous city with incredible tapas each one like a work of art. After three days in San Sebastian we headed south to Granada with a quick stop in Madrid for lunch with Pedro. Granada is another beautiful town with great tapas but they are not nearly as fancy as in San Sebastian. Heather and I accompanied Natalie to the Sierra Nevadas for a 15 mile hike to help with her research in collecting water from the high mountain lakes near Mulacen the highest mountain in the Iberian penisula. That was great fun! The next day Heather and I went to the Alhambra which I included in another gallery since there were so many photos. After leaving Granada, Heather and I took a bus to the beach in Nerja for the day and then headed to the port city of Malaga where we spent the night. After some wine and tapas we stumbled upon a seafood festival and dined on a platter of mussels, clams, scallops, crab, shrimp, cigales(kind of like crawfish but bigger) and camarones(tiny shrimp). The next day we saw the Picasso museum, he´s from Malaga, and then we were off to the heat of Cordoba. Although we missed seeing the mosque, we saw a neat Sephardic Jewish museum and had some good tapas before catching the train to Madrid. In Madrid we spent a day of sightseeing and tapeando(eating tapas and drinks) By evening we were drinking Sidra(alcoholic cider) and probably mixed too many spirits because we all had rasacas(hangovers) in the morning. After a few hours in the arabic baths which include a Turkish steam room, cold, warm, and hot baths as well as a massage we were new people and had enough energy to see the Prado museum. It was soo good to be able to hang out with Natalie, Ryan, Fiona, and Heather, I had such a blast!

Mere and Aaron´s wedding : What an incredible weekend!! It was an amazing experience to come home and surprise all of my dearest friends at Mere and Aaron's wedding. It was a gorgeous wedding! How perfect to have everyone in one place for three days, and in the mountains none-the-less. I've missed everyone terribly and it really rejuvenated my soul to see everyone. Three years is too long and seeing everyone once a year isn't enough. I had a wonderful time as always with this crew.

Portugal ´08 : For Semana Santa(Easter week) Pedro and I rented a car(Mercedes) and toured the Southern parts of Portugal called the Alentejo and El Algarve. Our adventures started in Evora, this fairytale-like town with white marble cobblestone streets, Roman ruins, and a crypt. To top it off we stayed in a palace of a Count that was turned into a hotel. Then we headed south to the coastal town of Olhao for two nights. Next we drove along the coast to Lagos, this beautiful port city close to the western tip of Portugal. We hiked along the coast dotted with gorgeous coves and cafes with amazing views. After driving up the western coast for a bit we headed inland to a charming spa village tucked in the Monchique mountains. Later we drove up the Guadiana river which divides Spain and Portugal. The drive was gorgeous with fields of wildflowers, sheeps, and pigs. Our last stop was Monsaraz, a walled in city perched high above the Alqueva resevoir. We stayed in a Convent coverted into a hotel and art museum. Portugal really is a beautiful country.

Morroco : In March I went to Marrakesh, Morroco with a friend, Andi, a fellow Kansan who's also living in Madrid. We stayed in an old palace with arab baths called a hamamm in the old walled in city known as the Medina. We were a minute walk from the Djemaa el-Fnaa square which is filled with the delicious smells, live music, snake charmers, monkeys, and people selling everything under the sun. We bartered to buy spices, jewelery, hookahs, and lamps. It was an exciting trip!

Greece : For Spring break this year Heidi, our friend Ellie, Pedro and I went to Greece. We rented a car in Athens and traveled all around the Peloponese coast visiting Korinthos, Mykenes, the island of Poros, Nafplio, Monemvassia, the Mani peninsula, Kardamyli, Mystras, Olympia and finally Delfoi before coming full circle back to Athens. It was an amazing trip! The driving was dangerously adventurous as we shared the road with mules, goats, and tractors. The greeks passed at lightning speeds along narrow and windy roads overlooking cliffs with spectacular views of the ocean. The countryside was blanketed with colorful wildflowers and with orange and lemon trees in full blossom the smell was incredible! The weather was beautiful, the food deliscious, and the people are very nice.

Semana Santa '06 : Spring '06 for the Easter holidays my parents came to Spain and after seeing Madrid we toured Andulucia in the south of Spain, visiting Granada, Cordoba, Seville, Arcos de la Frontera, Cadiz, Jerez and finally Sanlucar de Barrameda where we spent several days on the beach. The south of spain is known for their Klu Klux Klan-like religious processions during holy week which was amazing and eerie.

Las Fallas : The weekend of March 17th 2007, St. Patricks' Day, I went to Las Fallas in Valencia with two friends from work and Pedro. Las Fallas are a fiesta that last a week and culminate in displaying and burning building size sculptures made of wood plaster and paint. The sculptures usually depict a comical political or newsworthy scene from the year that just passed. The three winners are saved from being torched. We arrived in Valencia around 9pm by bus and left the next morning at 7am leaving us to party all night long. The time flew by!

Segovia : Segovia is an amazing town just outside of Madrid dominated by a Roman aquaduct, prominent cathedral and a Disney-style castle. It is famous for their Cochinillo or suckling baby pigs which as part of tradition is cut with a plate and then thrown on the floor(The plate not the pig). I must admit I was a little reluctant at first but don't knock till you try it! Riquisimo!

Croatia : Pedro and I backpacked for 20 incredible days in Croatia starting and ending in Venice, Italy. We departed on a very turbulent boatride across the Adriatic Sea and landed in Porec, a town in the Northern region of Croatia called Istria. The rest of the travel took us down the coast of Croatia island-hopping along the way until we arrived in Dubrovnik in the Southern tip of Croatia. We even had a short jaunt in Bosnia and Hercegovinia. In Istria we visited Porec, Rovinj and Pula, then on to the the Zadar region we saw Zadar, Pag island, and Plivice National Park. Next we hit the Sibenik-Knin Region where we stayed in the town of Sibenik for three days and traveled to nearby Krka NP and Kornati islands. Our next base camp for three days was in a town called Split in Central Dalmatia. From Split we traveled to Brac and Hvar islands. Our last three days was on the beautiful Korcula islands in Southern Dalmatia from where we visited Orebic, and Dubrovnik. An overnight bus took us back up the coast to spend one night in Pula before taking the boat back to Venice.
